A tioliters black plastic container, which has the potential to change the lives of a billion d3 people and save the lives of millions. Yesterday, Petra Wadström receive d3 Polhemsplatsen Prize for his invention d3 Solvatten, which uses the sun's rays purify dirty drinking water.
- I long to meet with Obama again. We had an interesting conversation in seven or eight minutes. I hope he can help Solvatten to reach out to more people, said Petra Wadström to the local paper Mitt i after meeting with perhaps the world's most powerful man, who was noticeably impressed with her invention.
Road to the meeting with Barack d3 Obama began a sunny day in Sydney 14 years ago. Petra Wadström stood a simple question: why do not we take advantage of the sunlight better? Later that year, she was in Indonesia, d3 where she witnessed firsthand how acute shortage d3 of water was among the local population.
Here arose the idea for the black water container, as Petra Wadström today selling through company Solvatten. The container, which is sold to aid agencies and the UN for around 600 bucks a pop, is almost ridiculously simple in its construction. Fill it with water, unfold it so that the sun can shine through the plastic casing on the inside - designed to let in the sun's UV rays that kill toxic micro-organisms d3 - and a few hours later the water is clean.
- In particular, women in developing countries, d3 which have on their lot fetching water and caring for others at home chores, have much use of my invention, d3 she told SvD Business in conjunction with the plastic container was sold large scale three years ago.
Since then a lot has happened. Petra Wadström has received numerous awards for his invention. Yesterday was another in the line, when she received the Swedish Engineers Technology Award Polhemsplatsen Prize by Prince Carl Philip - and 250 000 in prize money. The invention itself, the black water container, helps today around d3 80,000 poor people in 20 countries get access to clean water.
But the potential is far greater. Over a billion people lack access to clean water. d3 3.4 million people die each year because of dirty water and lack of sanitation, most of them children under five. Petra Wadström ambition is to all who are in need of clean water to gain access to her water purifier.
